LONG - Looking for information on Daniel LONG (b. ca. 1832). He is listed on the Tuscarawas County 1880 Census in Lawrence Township, with wife Eliza A., sons Charles, George,and John, and daughter Sarah E.. His second wife was Clara NEWTON (b. 1866); they had one child, Raymond Newton LONG, (b. 9 Oct 1887). Daniel LONG was a Civil War Veteran, still listed as being in Tuscarawas County, Bolivar post office, Lawrence Twp., on 1890 Census of Civil War Veterans Survivors and Widows.
Was wounded in the Civil War in Mississippi near Biloxi. In 1938 Annabell (Stebel) [my aunt] took her folks to visit the battlefield. They found his name on a monument with his regiment. He had a violin
he carried in the Horse Battalion. Ray [his son] had the violin and gave it to Annabell. They also had the bullet taken from his hand. He was shot while carrying the Yankee flag. Ray gave the bullet to Charles Long in Canton, Ohio.
Daniel was a Private, F Company, 16th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, April 20, 1861 to August 18, 1861, three months and 28 days; Sargeant, E Company, 80th Regiment, Ohio Infantry, November 6, 1861 to November 15, 1864, three years, nine days.
Residence: Bolivar Post Office, Tuscarawas County Ohio in 1890,
Illness: heart disease and piles,
Injury: wounded in right wrist.
Both Father and Mother's birthplace Pennsylvania
Per pension application records, "Pleas of the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio personally came Daniel Long on the 30th day of May A.D. 1866 who being first duly sworn, says that he was Captain of Co. C in the 80th regiment OVI on the 25th day of November, A.D. 1863 and commanded his Company on that day in the Battle of Misison Ridge Tennessee that Daniel Long first Sargeant of said Company was on said day in said Battle wounded while in the line of his duty in the right wrist by a musket ball of the enemy. Said Long was afterwards about the 10th day of July 1864 transferred to Co E of said regiment by consolodation of Company C and E of said 80th regiment by order of Col Pren Metham then commanding said regiment. Said Daniel Long never did duty in Company after being
wounded and was discharged on account of said wound..." signed Daniel Korn, Capt. Co. C, 80th regiment O.V.I.
A Daniel Long purchased 150 acres , for $3,000, in section 12, Twp. 9, Range 3, of Franklin Twp. on 19 March 1847, and again made a purchase of land Franklin Twp. West of Lawrence Twp., 27 Feb 1851 (15 acres for $350). Could this be an uncle of Daniel M. Long?
Per military records, he was 6 feet 1 inches tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and auburn hair. He was born in Tuscarawas County, and his occupation was a miner.
